PAY BACK WHAT YOU OWN TO THE SYSTEM

NED has spent a large amount subsidizing our education. We need to pay this back. According to some rough estimates this sum amounts to around $5000 to $7500. We need to figure out how to collect it and pay this amount. Typically, here in the USA the Alumni department which is a part of the university collects funds. Also each university has an Endowment fund. As an example Harvard University has a 26 billion dollar fund which is invested in the stock market. This was reported in the Los Angeles Times on September 13, 2007. (Business Section front page)

Well, I passed out in January 2007 (Electronic Engineering department - batch strength 140 students) and no one from my batch gave the GRE exam during their final year. Though many of my classmates are preparing for it now.

However, for the batch that is in the fibnal year currently, around 10 students have given their GRE. The major reason for this was the ETS Announcement that they were going to change the GRE pattern in September..which was why so many students got registered for GRE and started preparing for it as soon as they gave their third year exams.

They were too afraid of some new GRE pattern...however, as soon as the news came out that GRE pattern was not going to be changed many cancelled their registration. Still, around 10 have given the GRE this year, and are applying for MS in various american and canadian universities...

Most of them face problem in writing SOPs (most of the students have never written any 'original' piece of writing in their entire academic life!!) and another problem is getting Letter of Recommendation...b/c we only have one PhD person in the Electronic department...and he doesn't teach any course in Electronics, so he doesn't write any LORs either...the students usually have to get their LORs from faculty members who are only B.E. or M.S. (from NED)...which they believe would leave a bad impression on the admission officers.

in my view the best we can do for NED is to help students adn to give assistance to students in their education.

Please be clear on what you mean by "help students". Helping students could mean money, books, coaching etc. Please be specific on what you want.

I think all of us realize the importance of having a strong alumni and now we should strive make it so strong so that it has some sort of influence over the mgmt and admin of the university.
Time and again when individuals have tried to contact the administration to point out some bad practice or offer some advice, they have be cooly turned away. This should be one of the aspects of such an alumni.

Globalization or Exploitation of "Cyber Coolies" in India's IT Sweatshops?

India's IT sector business is essentially driven by low-cost call centers, first-line tech support, simple repetitive code writing, and execution of pre-defined test suites. A typical Indian IT worker is increasingly being called a "cyber coolie" or sometimes a "code coolie", the former term having been coined by an astute Indian columnist Praful Bidwai back in 2003. India has beco… Continue
