How Significant is Pakistan's Fa'az Air-to-Air Missile Flight Test?

Pakistan's recent successful flight test of Fa'az, its indigenous air-to-air missile, has garnered significant international attention. What is its significance?  First, it is a major breakthrough for its national defense industry, elevating Pakistan into an elite, relatively small group of nations possessing the complex engineering expertise required to build weapons capable of hunting fighter jets. Second, it enhances the country's self-reliance and makes it less vulnerable to sanctions or supply depletion. And finally, the Fa'az establishes the technical foundation for Pakistan to dictate its own air-to-air weapons roadmap, shifting its strategy from a defense importer to a self-sustained aerospace developer.

A Pakistani military press release said, “Fa’az will significantly enhance operational flexibility of Pakistan Air Force, further strengthening the country’s overall defense posture. The successful flight test underscores the technical maturity, innovation and self-reliance achieved by Pakistan’s defense industry.”

Developing beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missiles is known to be very difficult due to complex engineering challenges in propulsion, miniaturization, guidance, and network integration. Coordinating precise navigation, timing, target tracking, and handoffs from an unpredictable, high-speed airframe is vastly more complex than ground-based missile systems.

Fa'az was test-launched from JF-17 Block 3, an advanced AESA-radar-equipped, beyond-visual-range (bvr) capable, 4.5 generation fighter jet developed jointly by Pakistan and China. Together, these two represent Pakistan's continuing quest to build a domestic defense industry that can meet the evolving needs of the Pakistani military, and increase the nation's efforts to enhance its exports.

Pakistan's defense industry has ambitious plans to grow its capabilities to deliver more advanced versions of  fighter jets and air-to-air missiles. Fa'az 1 with IIR guidance and a range of 100 km is expected to be followed up with RF and IIR guided Fa'az 2 with an extended range of up to 200 km.

Pakistan has unveiled its PFX (Pakistan Fighter Experimental) program as a significant upgrade to its fighter jets. The new upgrade will The new upgrade will feature a number of stealth elements, ranging from the use of radar-absorbing composite materials and diverterless supersonic inlets (DSI) to an internal weapons bay (IWB) which will significantly reduce the aircraft's radar signature. It is targeted for completion by the end of this decade. In addition, the PFX's twin-engine design will improve maneuverability and allow greater payload capacity.

Pakistan’s military has also begun integrating AI to enhance its capabilities through research units, such as the Army Center of Emerging Technologies and the Pakistan Air Force-run Center for Artificial Intelligence and Computing (CENTAIC).  Already, Pakistan has unveiled a gamut of AI-enabled military weapons, including equipment manufactured by the state-owned Global Industrial & Defense Solutions (GIDS). These include unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs), such as Shahpar-II, and the Spider Anti-UAV system. Pakistan and India used numerous unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in the 2025 clashes, with Islamabad deploying YIHA-III drones manufactured by the Turkish defense contractor Baykar in addition to Shahpar-II.

, with reports indicating a potential acquisition of around 40 units of the export variant, known as the J-35AE or J-35A. [1, 2, 3]
Overview of the Deal
  • The Aircraft: The J-35 is a twin-engine, fifth-generation stealth multirole fighter developed by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It features low-observable stealth design, advanced avionics, and sensor fusion capabilities. [1, 2, 3]
  • Proposed Acquisition: Reports and state-media showings point to Pakistan negotiating or lining up an order for roughly 40 jets, potentially packaged alongside complementary Chinese systems like KJ-500 airborne early-warning and control aircraft and HQ-19 missile defense systems. [1, 2, 3]
  • Timeline & Status: While discussions and pilot training teasers have circulated, full integration and delivery timelines have faced debate and potential shifting schedules into late 2026 or beyond as China balances domestic People's Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) expansions and manufacturing capacity. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Strategic Context and Factors
  • Shift from U.S. Hardware: Pakistan has historically relied heavily on American F-16 fighter jets, though recent U.S. strings attached—such as technical security teams and base monitoring rules—as well as aging fleets have accelerated Islamabad's pivot toward Chinese military hardware. [1, 2]
  • The U.S. Factor: The U.S. recently outlined a $686 million upgrade package for Pakistan's existing F-16 fleet (extending them through 2040). Analysts note that introducing Chinese stealth technology into a military that simultaneously hosts U.S. technical monitors creates sensitive security dynamics regarding technology protection. [1]
  • Regional Impact: Most users on Quora agree that acquiring a 5th-generation stealth platform would reshape South Asian air power dynamics, potentially pressuring India to accelerate its own indigenous stealth development. Meanwhile, some discussion on Reddit's r/airplanes highlights that full operational integration may take until closer to 2030 to build out necessary infrastructure and training. [1, 2]

Kashmir: Farooq Abdullah Lauds Pakistan's Diplomatic Support

Speaking at an event in the Indian Occupied Kashmir, veteran Kashmiri leader Farooq Abdullah has lauded Pakistan's support for Kashmiris' rights. “They (Indian leaders in Delhi) are silent today because there is noise in the world, and our neighbor (Pakistan) is constantly behind this. Everywhere they say, ‘the decision regarding Kashmir has not been made’. That is what is saving us. Otherwise, their intentions are not good", he said.  He warned that Kashmiris risked losing their…
